F. Scott Fitzgerald fever is being reignited once more with the latest version of one of America’s most iconic novels, The Great Gatsby, hitting the big screen. The enduring legacy of Gatsby is as powerful today, as then, as economists refer to the USA’s economic inequalities and failure of the American Dream as the ‘Gatsby curve.’ Sarah Churchwell is the author of Careless People: Murder, Mayhem and the Invention of The Great Gatsby, which explores the true story of the chaotic world Fitzgerald lived in, reconstructing the parties, the drunken weekends, jazz clubs, rise of celebrity culture and casual interaction of high society and organised crime. Sarah joins Alex Preston, whose debut novel, The Bleeding City, picks over the carcass of the financial markets in the wake of the 2007 crash in a withering love story and study of excess, inspired by Fitzgerald’s short story Return to Babylon.

Be seduced by the destructive glamour of America’s most iconic writer, and hear just how prophetic Fitzgerald was, and remains.
