International Women's Day – 8 March 2011

Posted by in Author News

Yesterday, 8 March 2011, was the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day, a global day to celebrate women's economic, political and social achievements. This year the theme was encouraging equal access to education, training, science and technology for girls and women.

The G2 section of the Guardian dedicated a whole issue to the 100 most inspiring women, and included 17 writers. Of those, we were delighted to see that 6 were Virago authors:

Maya Angelou, Margaret Atwood, Somaly Mam, Patti Smith, Eve Ensler, Hawa Abdi

Newsweek and The Daily Beast then listed 150 women who 'shake the world'

Hawa Abdi, Eve Ensler and Somaly Mam featured again, alongside Ingrid Betancourt, Mukhtar Mai and Sheryl WuDunn (co-author of Half the Sky, along with her husband Nicholas D. Kristof).
