No justice for Mukhtar Mai

Virago published In The Name of Honour by Mukhtar Mai in 2007. It was her moving account of how she was gang raped as punishment for an 'honour crime' allegedly committed by her brother, an offence for which there was never any proof.
After the horrific rape, custom dictated that she would kill herself. But Mai defied custom. In an unprecedented act of courage, she took her rapists to court. But justice has not prevailed and five of the six men charged have been acquitted and the sixth has had the death penalty commuted to life imprisonment. Read the article here.
