Perfect Lives by Polly Samson to be Book at Bedtime

Posted by in Book News

We are delighted to announce that Polly Samson's Perfect Lives has been picked as the BBC Radio 4's Book at Bedtime. It begins this Monday, 21 November at 10.45pm and will be on at the same time every night next week. Here's what Polly had to say when she found out:

Having Perfect Lives as a Book at Bedtime is like having my best wish for the book granted.  I was invited to the recording of 'The Egg' and 'The Rose Before the Vine' which were read by Claire Skinner of Outnumbered fame (I think this is the only time that my children have asked me, nay begged me, to get an autograph).  The five selected stories have been masterfully abridged and produced by Christine Hall and I was amazed to hear them work so well despite being cut to under 2,000 words each (some of the stories are 5 or 6,000 words in the book).  Christine told me that Mark Meadows, the actor she employed to read 'Barcarolle', is also, completely by coincidence, a good pianist so she was able to get him to play some parts of Chopin’s Barcarolle to fade in and out of the story. It’s that sort of thing that makes me believe that Perfect Lives has been blessed in some way!

Below is the list of stories that will be featured:

  • Monday 21 November: 'The Egg'
  • Tuesday 22: 'Barcarolle'
  • Wednesday 23: 'The Birthday Present'
  • Thursday 24: 'The Rose Before the Vine'
  • Friday 25: 'Remote Control'

Don't miss it!

And beady-eyed regulars will have noticed that Perfect Lives is also the next Virago Book Club pick. Visit the website again or follow us on Twitter for more information – and the opportunity to come to an event with Polly at Virago!
